Falls Never Been To
Falls known of but not been to - either 'not on this trip' or 'not been to
ever' (that is why only artist's impressions of these falls exist).

- GPS Position: 09 20.000S 029 40.940E (from maps)
- Directions: "From Lumangwe Falls head towards Mporokoso. After
Itabu River ask for Davis Bwalya to show you the bad road or walk for three
hours one way from Chiwala Primary School". cf Allen "Northern Waterfalls
Trip", p.8.
- Description: Cascades over boulders into a deep gorge.
- Comment: cf Mwanza, "In search of the Yangumwila Falls", in Women
Travel, Rough Guides 1990.
- GPS Position:
- Directions: "2km N of Danger Hill Monument, turn right for 5km,
then left for 3km, then 0.6km to the falls" cf Allen "Northern Waterfalls
Trip", p.19
- Description: "Falls splashing down a narrow gorge … hard to get a
good view except for top section … surprisingly deep stream, nice spot to view
or camp".
- Comment: We tried to follow Allen's description but failed
completely; no turnoff visible.
- GPS Position:
- Directions: "Drive down the Kalabwe School road to the Luangwa
Ferry stop - across at Kang'tanga village ask for Lewis Chanda or another
guide and a safe place to park. Walk three hours there and three hours back".
cf Allen "Northern Waterfalls Trip", p.10
- Description: "Thick trees on the river fringe, only view [of the
geographic falls] from a wobbly log".
- Comment: Looks not worth the trouble.
- GPS Position:
- Directions: From the Kawambwa-Mporokoso road, after crossing the
Kalungwishi River, turn left for 13km to Lumangwe - another 5km to
Kabweluma Falls.
- Description: cf d'Elbee, Allen, Quarmby.
- Comment: Very well known falls. Of the three falls (and actually
all northern waterfalls) I would rate Kabweluma the most beautiful and
dramatic - a definite Must for anyone in the vicinity.
Luangwa Escarpment Falls
(Falls on the escarpment into the Luangwa
Valley)
- GPS:
- Direction: go to Mutinondo Wilderness - 72km S of Mpika, 25km from
turnoff - ask for a guide to falls (all hiking)
- Description: "the Mutinondo tumbled through a narrow rocky crevice
in the rock, splaying out wide at the base like an African broom 'cheswa'" cf
Allen "Northern Waterfalls Trip", p.18
- Comment: looks like an interesting fall (if it wasn't for the long
hike).
- Addendum from Lari of Mutinondo Lodge: You CAN drive to the falls.
From Mutinondo Wilderness Lodge take the road past the stables and staff
houses, over the Musamfushi River and continue for 3 km until you reach a T
junction. Turn left along what is known as the Mafoni Road (because the man
who made it wore an ear phone/hearing aid) for about 16km and take the left
fork, continue for another 6km until you can't drive any further. Walk down
the escarpment to the different parts of the Mutinondo Falls with a guide or
map to the falls. It is a steep but very satisfying walk, give yourselves
plenty of time to drive there (4 hours return), return walk to the falls (5
hours) with time to swim, have lunch and enjoy the view into the Luangwa
Valley. There are plans for the Mpumba Community to clear and define Quentin's
track to a great campsite on the Mutinondo River, involving a 2 hour walk to
the falls. This is accessable for those who are extremely good trackers and
antbear-hole negotiators but will be wonderful when the community conservation
project gets going - next year because we are going to do it in partnership
with the community if the project doesn't! Our bridge is not functional in the
rains nor until the water gets low enough to put it back (August). Another
option is to turn east off the Great North Road (the Mafoni Road) 20km south
of our turnoff - opposite the old Esau's Village (at the top of the hill north
of Kapengwe School).

- GPS:
- Direction: "Turn right towards Katibunga on the Mpika-Shiwa road,
then towards Sankula and ask directions. A lot of guiding is required" cf
Allen "Northern Waterfalls Trip", p.20
- Description: "The river, separated into streams and channels,
slides down huge rocks to a crocodile-infested pool below"
- Comment: Another long walk?!
- GPS: 11 48.422S 032 04.599E 1237m 09.21 25.10.01
- Direction: Within North Luangwa National Park near Kutandala Camp
- Description: Cascades ending in hippo pool
- Comment: A popular hike from Kutandala, good for swimming and
picnic lunches (no photo or drawing available)
